The Manchester boys’ and girls’ teams both held the lead after the first day of competition in the Dominion District Championship meet May 12 but Cosby and Midlothian, schools which specialize in running events came back in May 14 competition.

In just its first year having a home track, Midlothian High School got the honor of hosting the meet and made sure each event went off like clockwork. And it was like clockwork that the Trojans chipped away at the Manchester lead in Wednesdays running events though Manchester would hang on by a score of 195-132.

On the girls’ side Manchester took a 63-38 lead over L.C. Bird after field events with Midlothian in a close third at 31 points. The Lady Lancers picked up wins from Nikki Nunn in the triple jump and Jasmine Eddy in the shot put along with a second place finish from Erica Perkins in the long jump, but Midlothian began it’s comeback with a win in the 4x800-meter relay with a win from the team of Paige Johnston, Tierney Willard, Lauren McBride and Anne Tenser.

The Lady Trojans picked up additional points with 1-2 finishes from Kathleen and Leia Lautzenheiser in the 1,600-meter run and Johnston and Samantha Dow in the 800-meter run. Amy Witt, Leia Lautzenheiser, Kathleen Lautzenheiser and Anne Tenser finished as the top four in the 3,200-meter run, and the Midlothian 4x800-meter relay team picked up a win as well.

However, Manchester swept the top five spots in the 100-meter hurdles as Stephanie Brown, Erica Perkins, Mphamvu Kalengamaliro, Erica Caldwell and Taryn Hare came in back-to-back to hold the lead. The Lady Lancers also picked up wins from Desiree Russell in the 100-meter dash, Brown, Russell, Candice Hairston and Caldwell in the 4x100-meter relay and Kacen Delphin in the 400-meter dash.

On the boys’ side Manchester held a slim 47.5-41 lead after the first day thanks to a win in the shot put event by Justin Simmons, a second-place finish in the triple jump by Antonio Miller and third place finishes by Devron Harris in the high jump and the 3,200-meter relay team.

Cosby however, came back from fifth-place and 25.5 point with five wins and three second-place finishes for a 155.5-95.5 win over the Lancers.

Titan wins came from Mitchell Shifflett in the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash, Shifflett, Anthony Carlie, Andre Redd and Joseph Thomas in the 4x100-meter relay, Redd in the 400-meter dash and Mark Merritt in the 3200-meter run. Cosby took the top 5 spots in the 200-meter dash as Shifflett, Redd, Thomas, Carlie and Christopher Broadnax took the top spots, respectively.

Akeem Fayson provided the lone win on day 2 for Manchester in the 110-meter hurdles. Second place finishes went to Devron Harris in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles and Jason Thorpe in the 800-meter run.
