CCF Staff Gears Up for Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k

About 20 percent of Christian Children’s Fund’s Richmond-based staff will be among the thousands of walkers and runners taking part in the 10th annual Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k on March 28.

Participation in the race is part of the efforts of CCF’s new Wellness Committee, which is encouraging activities to promote better health among employees.

From raising money to fight cancer to becoming healthier to just being part of the community, there are many reasons CCF staff is taking part in finishing 6.2 miles that day.

“Even though I have never walked nor ran a race of this magnitude, I did not hesitate to sign up,” said Shakita Macklin, Financial Systems analyst. “Several members of my family have battled cancer, so I’m walking in honor of them.”

“I have a grandmother with three types of cancer. I have also lost several close friends due to cancer. I would like to honor them by walking in this,” said Jeanette Duncan, data administrator.

For Duncan, walking the 10k is also a part of helping her reach weight-loss goals.

“Walking every day will help me achieve my goals and keep me motivated,” she said.

Jessi Hanson, education associate, has several reasons for running the 10k.

“I like running as a hobby, not only because it is a great way to stay in shape but also because it offers 30 minutes to an hour a day of just ‘me’ time,” she said.

CCF exists to help deprived, excluded and vulnerable children have the capacity to become young adults, parents and leaders who bring lasting and positive change to their communities. CCF works in 31 countries and assists 15.2 million children and family members worldwide.

CCF employs about 150 people at its Richmond’s CCF headquarters on Emerywood Parkway. For more information on CCF, visit http://www.christianchildrensfund.org.
