Last Saturday, November 15, 2008, I ran the first ten miles of the Richmond Marathon in 80 minutes and then I started to die. I had gone out way to fast. I held on through the half-way mark, crossed the Lee Bridge and headed for Main Street. I knew my wife and daughter’s family (three grandchildren) would be cheering me on at Main and Lombardy. I got there in one piece looking as good as possible to enjoy their support and make them proud. My pace had dropped from 8 minute miles to close to ten minute miles – ugh! Honestly I was dead tired physically and loosing my focus mentally. After a quick kiss and hugs I ran, or jogged, down Main Street toward the 18 mile water station.
Just past the water stop I gave in mentally and started to walk. I called my wife on my cell phone to tell her the bad news – she listened and told me she loved me. I hung up and walked. Now it was a fast and determined walk - there was no thought of quitting. I had my head down when I heard a guy yell, “Beard.” He started to chant, “Beard. Beard. Beard…” Another guy joined him and then a whole crowd was yelling encouragement, “Beard. Beard. Beard.” It seemed like suddenly the entire block on Main Street was chanting, “BEARD,” and so what could I do? I threw my arms up into the air, smiled, and started to run. The crowd cheered wildly. Little did they know I would not walk again on my way to a 3:59:03 finishing time? Richmond is the “Friendliest Marathon.” THANKS!!!!
